N
Narrow range IPG strips
Immobilized pH gradient strips with a pH gradient range of 1, 2 or 3 units

Native gel electrophoresis
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under non-denaturing conditions

NCBI
The National Center for Biotechnology Information, a division of the NIH, is the home of the BLAST and Entrez servers.

NEPHGE
Non-equilibrium pH gradient electrophoresis for basic proteins

TOP

NES
Nano-electrospray; a miniaturized version of ESI that allows for greater sensitivity

Neural network
An interconnected assembly of simple processing elements, units or nodes, whose functionality is loosely based on the animal brain. The processing ability of the network is stored in the inter-unit connection strengths, or weights, obtained by a process of adaptation to, or learning from, a set of training patterns.
Neural nets are used in bioinformatics to map data and make predictions.

Nitrocellulose
Membrane for Western blotting

Nnpredict
A software tool / algorithm at UCSF that predicts secondary structure types for the residues in a given query sequence.

Nucleotide
A single letter of the genetic code; three nucleotides form a codon that encodes a single amino acid in a protein sequence

TOP

O
Object-relational database
Database combining the elements of object orientation and object-oriented programming languages with relational database capabilities.

Orthologous
Groups of genes or proteins from different organisms that have the same function are said to be orthologous.
Homologous sequences are said to be orthologous when they are direct descendants of a sequence in the common ancestor (i.e., without having undergone a gene duplication event).
