While at KU, she moved through the faculty ranks and in 1991 was promoted to full professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences. Following a national search in 1995, she was appointed Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. In the spring of 2001, Dr. Mason returned to Purdue where she is currently a Professor of Biology and Provost of the University.
